LEAD will create Digital Twins of urban logistics networks in six cities in TEN-T urban Nodes, namely Madrid (Spain), The Hague (the Netherlands), Budapest (Hungary), Lyon (France), Oslo (Norway) and Porto (Portugal).

These will test and represent different innovative solutions for city logistics to address the requirements of the on-demand economy, while aligning competing interests and creating value for all different stakeholders in a public-private setting.

Each value case will allow for the development of solutions for shared, connected, and low-emission logistics operations, empowered by an adaptive modelling approach and the Digital Twin models. Agent-based models will be used to enable logistics stakeholders to recognise their roles and business models, including relevant operational, tactical, and strategic decisions in the Digital Twin, mirroring value cases in city life.

The long-term vision of LEAD is to design an open, physical internet-inspired framework for smart city logistics that incorporates the created Digital Twins, laying the foundations for the development of large-scale city Digital Twins.

PLANET addresses the challenges of assessing the impact of emerging global trade corridors on the TEN-T network and ensuring effective integration of the European to the Global Network by focusing in two key R&D pillars:

  • A Geo-economics approach, modelling and specifying the dynamics of new trade routes and its impacts on logistics infrastructure & operations, with specific reference to TEN-T, including peripheral regions and landlocked developing countries;
  • An EU-Global network enablement through disruptive concepts and technologies (IoT, Blockchain and Physical Internet, 5G, 3D printing, autonomous vehicles /automation, hyperloop) which can shape its future and address its shortcomings, aligned to the DTLF concept of a federated network of T&L platforms.
PLANET goes beyond strategic transport studies, and ICT for transport research, by rigorously modelling, analysing, demonstrating & assessing their interactions and dynamics thus, providing a more realistic view of the emerging T&L environment. The project employs 3 EU-global real-world corridor Living Labs including sea and rail for intercontinental connection and provides the experimentation environment for designing and exploiting future PI-oriented Integrated Green EU-Global T&L Networks [EGTN]. To facilitate this process, PLANET delivers a Symbiotic Digital Clone for EGTNs, as an open collaborative planning tool for TEN-T Corridor participants, infrastructure planners, and industry/technology strategists.

PLANET also delivers an Active Blueprint and Road Map, providing guidance and building public & private actor capacity towards the realisation of EGTNs, and facilitating the development of disadvantaged regions. The project engages major T&L stakeholders, contributing to both strategy and technology and (importantly) has the industry weight and influence to create industry momentum in Federated Logistics and TEN-T’s integration into the Global Network.

In 2017 the comprehensive view on the Physical Internet from the IPIC conference merged with the technical and intralogistic view from the Logistikwerkstatt Graz for a promising format. Both the IPIC and the Logistikwerkstatt Graz are well established international conferences with broad contribution from industry and research. The purpose of our fourth Physical Internet conference was to bring together all interested parties and continue sharing of ideas to further build foundations and momentum towards the emergence of efficient and sustainable interconnected logistics. The Institute of Logistics Engineering (ITL) at Graz University of Technology hosted this international event July 4-6, 2017 in Austria on its campus.

The conference included keynotes from key stakeholders of supply chains (manufacturers, retailers, 3PL and academics) and stimulated the discussions in several workshop sessions. New business models, enabling technologies and experimentations already underway were presented, making this meeting a unique opportunity to learn, network and discuss the latest results and challenges about interconnected logistics.

The ambition of the Systems & Technologies for Interconnected Logistics Group thematic group is to define research and innovation paths that need to be addressed to achieve fully interconnected and real-time (re)configurable supply chains in (global) supply chain networks with wide available and affordable ICT solutions for all types of companies and participants.

In essence, this is a requirement to enable a Physical Internet: an open global logistic system founded on physical, digital, and operational interconnectivity, enabled through encapsulation of goods, standard interfaces and protocols. The aim the Physical Internet vision is to move, store, produce, supply and use physical objects throughout the world in a manner that is economically, environmentally and socially efficient and sustainable.

As part of the renewed ALICE strategy and the updating of working groups scopes end 2017, this thematic group is now integrating topics related to safety and security of supply chains, previously adressed in thematic group 1. Main topics adressed in this working group are: Low intrusive security technologies, supply chain resilience, advanced supply chain risk management, system based supervision, coordinated border management, visibility of end-to-end supply chains, seamless data interoperability, ownership & governance, intelligent objects, smart devices, IoT & ITS, Big Data & Data Analitycs,  Blockchain, Artificial Intellingence, Digital Twins, dematerialization, autonomous logistics operations, transhipment technology and handling of logistics units.

The Freight and Logistics Data Sharing Activity is an umbrella programme within the ALICE TG3: Systems & Technologies for Interconnected logistics and tackles the challenges on the adoption of data sharing in transport, logistics and supply chain. Participants get exposure to running initiatives and implications for industry (e.g. paperless transport, e-FTI regulation, and data spaces)

The current focus of F&L Data Sharing programme will be on three main areas: 1. standardisation and interoperability of data sharing applications 2. identification of industry trends and initiatives for data spaces 3. Data Sharing cloud report from BOOSTLOGThese three areas will form a separate sub-programme, managed by three different ALICE TG3 vice-chairs and have concrete descriptions.

Which is the Output/what will it be delivered?

  • Exchange of experience explored technologies among ALICE members
  • Knowledge transfer among ALICE members (showcases and project demos)
  • Identify R&I gaps for implementation of explored technologies in logistics related applications
  • Position paper on data exchange governance, standards and best practices

How can ALICE members contribute/participate?

  • Participating actively in the webinars and events organised under this programme
  • Contributing to the preparation of position paper(s)
  • Sharing of experience and knowhow with explored technologies.
  • Express their interest in specific applications and/or technologies

Blockchain has been one important developing technology to support logistics digitalization. ALICE recognized earlier some of these potentials but also the hype behind the technology and organized the Collaborative Innovation Day: Blockchain applications and cases for logistics[1] as a starting point to get a better overview of the technology and potential use cases and applications for logistics (link).

After a couple of years, we start to see some application brought forward into the market, but we also recognize some challenges to bring the value proposition forward to customers and specific challenges in the development of blockchain platforms. Blockchain has indeed triggered certain developments in which blockchain is used in combination with others.
