Section outline

  • Project Overview

The main goal of CEI-Sphere (Cloud-Edge-IoT Spheres of Large-Scale Pilots) is to support the development of an open, interoperable and competitive European Cloud-Edge-IoT (CEI) ecosystem by connecting large-scale pilots, industry stakeholders, research organisations and policymakers.

    • CEI-Sphere supports the deployment and uptake of Cloud-Edge-IoT technologies by building on the outcomes of Europe’s Large-Scale Pilots (LSPs), particularly O-CEI and COP-PILOT, helping transform innovation into scalable and market-ready solutions.

    • CEI-Sphere promotes interoperability, standardisation and collaboration across the Cloud-Edge-IoT continuum through common frameworks, Minimum Interoperability Mechanisms (MiMs), open architectures and shared approaches that reduce fragmentation and support large-scale adoption.

    • CEI-Sphere introduces the concept of “Spheres”, collaborative environments that cluster use cases around three strategic domains: Energy and Infrastructure Resilience, Mobility, Logistics and Software-Defined Vehicles, and Industrial Optimisation and Productivity. These spheres facilitate knowledge exchange, stakeholder engagement and cross-sector collaboration.

    • CEI-Sphere supports the development of a European innovation ecosystem by connecting technology providers, industry actors, research organisations and public authorities, creating pathways from pilot activities to commercial deployment and market uptake.

    • CEI-Sphere coordinates dedicated Task Forces focused on Open Source, Architecture and Standardisation; Market Uptake and Industry Engagement; and Stakeholder Forum and Outreach. These activities help align technical developments with industry needs, policy priorities and future standards.

    • CEI-Sphere contributes to Europe’s digital competitiveness and strategic autonomy by supporting open standards, federated architectures and reusable building blocks that strengthen Europe’s capacity to deploy Cloud-Edge-IoT solutions across critical sectors such as mobility, logistics, energy and industry.

For the logistics sector, CEI-Sphere is particularly relevant through its Mobility, Logistics and Software-Defined Vehicles Sphere, which explores how Cloud-Edge-IoT technologies can support digitalisation, interoperability, real-time decision making, connected logistics operations and the future deployment of intelligent transport and freight systems.

Coordinated by BluSpecs, CEI-Sphere brings together leading organisations from industry, research, standardisation and innovation ecosystems to accelerate the deployment of interoperable Cloud-Edge-IoT solutions across Europe.

The project started in October 2024 and runs until March 2027, with a total budget of approximately €2 million.
