GREEN-LOG is a Horizon Europe co-funded project which will develop Logistics-as-a service platforms for interconnected city logistics, automated delivery concepts using autonomous vehicles and delivery droids, cargo-bike-based innovations for sustainable micro-consolidation, and multimodal parcel deliveries integrating public transportation.The approach is deployed and validated in five Urban Living Labs: Athens, Barcelona, Flanders (Gent, Leuven and Mechelen), Oxfordshire and Ispra. Three follower cities – Arad, Helsinborg, and Valga – will be involved in testing the transferability of the proposed innovations.

Road freight transport is moving towards a zero-emission future. In Logibat, VIL has investigated the operational and economic conditions to make battery-electric transport feasible, and which requirements would enable a rollout of a nationwide charging network.  With the spectacular development of battery technology, the battery-electric vehicle on the road can make a cost-effective and substantial contribution. Moreover, increasingly stringent regulations and the growing pressure for sustainability are forcing the logistics sector to think again.  Truck manufacturers indicate that the pioneering phase is over. They are taking their first steps towards series production. Battery technology is becoming increasingly powerful and heavy-duty battery-electric trucks with a driving range of several hundred kilometres are already a reality.  Considering the beneficial price development, this technology has the potential for a quick breakthrough. At the same time, “gigantic battery factories” are rapidly being set up in Europe. Not only do the major truck manufacturers offer electric versions of their vehicles, but newcomers are also competing for the electrification of freight transport. GOALS To prepare the Flemish transport sector for the application of battery technology to achieve emission-free goods transport by road. VIL investigated the operational and economic conditions to make battery-electric transport feasible and what requirements are needed to roll out a nationwide charging network; at shippers, depots, and (semi-)public stops. This ecosystem requires new business models. Subsequently, the project explores the role of logistics companies in the charging infrastructure network. In addition, the potential for Catenary Solution in Road Systems within Flanders has also been studied. RESULTS ·         Electric trucks are no longer a distant future but are gradually becoming a reality. At a minimum, they will play a substantial role in all segments of our freight transportation and will cause an unprecedented revolution in the transportation sector. ·         The transport, energy, and government sectors must join forces. ·         Operationally, electric driving requires a new way of working. Charging must be integrated into operations. ·         The transport and energy sectors must improve their collaboration. For example, transportation companies must fundamentally change their approach to purchasing energy. In addition, the necessary infrastructure will have to be in place in the right places in time to ensure sufficient electric power. ·         Energy suppliers can also help the transportation sector obtain electricity cost-effectively. ·         The government must provide a framework that allows these objectives to be realized, such as adjustments to driving and rest periods. In collaboration with VUB, a TCO tool was developed that provides insight into the Total Cost of Ownership of a battery-electric truck versus a diesel vehicle.

The E-BOOST project aims to support European electromobility SMEs by offering a range of services through several Open Calls, providing a maximum cumulative grant of €60 000 per SME. The Open Calls are divided into four main categories: 1.       EXPLORE: a.       Open Calls: Five calls are open for SMEs to participate in targeted international fairs: b.       Grants: €1,500 per participant. c.        Purpose: To provide exposure, networking opportunities, and market exploration on a global scale.   2.       INNOVATE:  a.       Open Calls: Two bottom-up and three top-down calls are available. b.       Grants: Funding for single or collaborative projects from TRL 4 to 7. c.        Purpose: To foster innovation and technological advancements in electromobility, helping develop new products and solutions.   3.       SERVICES: a.       Open Calls: Two calls are open for grants to obtain external support services. b.       Grants: Ranging from €5,500 to €20,000. c.        Purpose:  To support services such as Intellectual Property (IP) management, Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), Human Resources (HR), internationalization strategies, and market studies.   4.       TRAINING: a.       Grants: Up to €3,000 per beneficiary. b.       Purpose: To enable participation in training programs identified by the SMEs and provided by their chosen training providers, enhancing workforce skills and capabilities.   Additionally, a final round of Open Calls will target communication event companies to organize two specialized spaces at the E-BOOST final event in May 2025. ·         Private Investment Space: To connect investors with SMEs and enhance private investments. ·         Internationalization Space: To facilitate efforts towards global market integration.   Overall, E-BOOST’s comprehensive support through grants, services, and training aims to bolster the electromobility sector across Europe, driving sustainable growth and technological advancements. REEL is a national initiative where leading Swedish actors have joined forces to accelerate the transition to electrified, emission-free heavy transport on our roads. Within the venture, REEL establish, run and evaluate around 70 different regional logistics flows in varying types of driving assignments. REEL brings together transport buyers, forwarders and distributors, haulage companies, terminal operators, charging point operators, electricity grid companies and suppliers of trucks, charging equipment and management systems. In addition, regions, national authorities and universities participate in this initiative.

RISE-SME aims at developing a model that can assist companies in detecting and anticipating disruptions in their supply chains. The main outcome of RISE-SME is to build a methodology for different industrial ecosystems, that can identify disruptions and technological opportunities for the uptake of advanced technologies in SMEs, so as to enable flexible, agile and resilient supply chains that can easily be adapted. In order to do so, the following activities will be deployed:Mapping of existing industrial ecosystems and its associated supply chain models, in order to identify critical dependencies and weaknesses in specific industrial ecosystemDeveloping a methodology for detecting and anticipating disruptions with long term effects on the supply chain, to reduce strategic dependencies on critical products, especially on advanced technologiesMapping and scouting advanced technologies and their associated solutions from technology suppliers that can help supply chain processes to be less uncertain and complexAnalysing existing technology gaps in several industrial ecosystems, leading to a matchmaking tool with tech-savvy and traditional SMEsBuilding alliances among traditional and tech-savvy SMEs through cluster organisations and DIHs in the industrial ecosystem, resulting into the launch of a pilot in each one of the ecosystemsThe project consortium will leverage their knowledge on supply chain and their reach to key supply chain actors, traditional SMEs and technology suppliers. The involvement of technology partners and entities representing tech-savvy SMEs will ensure a thorough consideration of the following advanced technologies: robotics, AI, IoT, Blockchain, edge computing, AR/VR solutions, B2B digital platforms, Big Data/analytics technology, 3D printing, advanced materials, micro- and nanoelectronics, nanotechnologies and photonics, among others.
